Bailey Nurseries is acquiring Carlton Plants as of October 31, 2018. As a continuation of its principle of Growing What’s Next™, Bailey places a strong focus on supplying the grower market with top quality plants supported by excellent service. Integrating one of the industry’s most wellrespected bareroot growers into the Bailey organization offers customers an expanded product portfolio with the same quality and service they have come to expect.

“Carlton Plants is very fortunate to have so many great employees, customers, and colleagues with whom strong relationships have been developed over the past 128 years. Carlton remains very strong and healthy because of them,” said Carlton General Manager Jon Bartch. “With respect to these relationships, and as a business owner, there is a responsibility to consider the longer term future of the company. I am excited to share this future with another relationship-focused organization such as Bailey.”

Second generation Bailey Nurseries owner Gordon Bailey Sr. purchased Carlton Plants in 1984 before his grandson [Bartch] purchased the company in 1997. This thread of common family ownership between Bailey and Carlton, as well as the already collaborative relationship between the companies, has laid the foundation for a smooth integration into one organization under the Bailey umbrella.

St. Paul, MN (September 28, 2017) – On Saturday, September 23rd it was announced that Easy Elegance® Screaming Neon Red™ received 4 of the 7 awards given at the 2017 Biltmore International Rose Trials IN Asheville, North Carolina. This variety, introduced to the consumer marketplace in 2015, received the following honors:

George & Edith Vanderbilt Award for Most Outstanding Rose of the Trials

Lord Burleigh Award for Most Disease Resistant

William Cecil Award for Best Growth Habit

Chauncey Beadle Award for Best Shrub

These two-year trials are judged by a permanent jury four times each year, and take place at the famed Rose Garden at Biltmore. According to Biltmore's rose experts, the competing roses are evaluated for overall health and vigor, fragrance, disease resistance, and ability to repeat bloom.

“Screaming Neon Red™ was bred by Ping Lim at our in-house facility in Oregon,” said Debbie Lonnee, Bailey Nurseries’ Product Development Manager. “It was then tested in Minnesota and selected because we loved its disease resistance, hardiness and unique, loud and beautiful flower color. Screaming Neon Red was actually its nickname, but it so perfectly describes the flower that it stuck.”

Endless Summer® Updates Visual Identity

A more contemporary look for the industry leader in reblooming hydrangeas

St. Paul, MN (November 28, 2016) – A decade after revolutionizing the shrub category with a branded reblooming hydrangea, the Endless Summer® brand is introducing a new visual identity.

The new logo and brand mark provides a smooth transition from the existing logo, yet augments an understanding of what the brand is, especially for a new consumer. “The new graphic icon and shifting from the Endless Summer® Collection to Endless Summer® Hydrangeas more clearly explains our offering to Millennials and others learning about gardening,” said Brand and Business Development Manager Natalia Hamill.

“We retained the iconic look of the established brand logo, while offering a fresh design that is more contemporary, easier to read and relates better to current and future gardeners,” Hamill adds. “This visual shift is in line with our product development objectives of breeding new hydrangeas that perform better in today’s marketplace and packaging them in a way that communicates easily.”

This new brand identity will be carried throughout all marketing communications including pots, tags, and print and digital materials. The transition will take effect starting January 2017 for all communications and marketing, but licensed growers will be able to continue working through their existing supply of tags and pots.

2017 Hardiness Zone Changes

After an examination of sales figures and in-ground research, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has updated the hardiness zones for a multitude of trees, shrubs and perennials, including some from the First Editions® Collection. A Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association Committee comprised of leaders from different market segments throughout the state, including representatives from Bailey Nurseries, led the charge and made suggestions to the MDA, which then adopted the following suggestions. Regarding First Editions® changes, each affected variety has been updated with a cold hardiness of Zone 3, when they were previously labeled Zone 4. Fall Planting Tips


Autumn is Perfect Time to Add Color, Plant for Spring

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Aug. 18, 2016) – Although spring is widely considered prime planting season, fall is actually an optimal time for homeowners to add color and plot a vision for next year’s landscape.

“Autumn is the perfect time to assess landscaping needs and fill any gaps that exist in your landscape,” said Bailey Nurseries brand manager and horticulturist Natalia Hamill. “And while you’re at it, you can add plants that provide a pop of color – like a throw pillow for your garden.”

Bailey Nurseries, which has been around for more than a century, has spent years perfecting shrubs and trees that have better blooms, colorful foliage, compact shapes or multiple seasons of interest, many of which provide rich color during the fall months. Many trees and shrubs can be planted during the fall, so gardeners can enjoy spring blooms without waiting a whole year.

Top Fall Landscaping Tips

Here are the top fall gardening tips from Bailey Nurseries’ experts.

- Take inventory: Decide what, and where, your landscape is lacking and plug the gaps now. Depending on plant type and local climate, you’ll be able to enjoy a full, bursting garden as early as next spring.

- Multi-season interest: Consider adding plants that offer color for more than one season. Examples include Endless Summer® BloomStruck® Hydrangeas with blooms from late spring through fall, First Editions® Tiger Eyes® Cutleaf Staghorn Sumac with chartreuse leaves in summer changing to stunning yellow, orange and scarlet in fall, and First Editions® Standing Ovation® Serviceberry with sweet white flowers in spring followed by blue fruit and red-orange leaves in autumn. These plants provide instant color in fall and can keep a landscape looking beautiful for years to come afterward:

- Cayenne Dogwood: These bright red stems shine all winter, even in southern parts of the country. Blue berries form in late summer amid Cayenne Dogwood’s lush green leaves.

- Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark: Amber Jubilee’s orange, yellow and golden hues are a perfect fit for fall. New spring leaves are also full of glowing tones and delicate white blooms.

- Pink Sparkler™ Birchleaf Spirea: Exquisite pink flowers bloom on Pink Sparkler in the early summer then re-emerge in the fall. Additionally, fall flowers appear down the stem for a full, rich appearance and pop of pink, and the leaves turn burgundy red during autumn.

- BloomStruck® Hydrangea: After providing great summer flower color, BloomStruck leaves turn a rich, deep red – the ideal touch for a fall landscape. From the First Editions® collection, Vanilla Strawberry™ Hydrangeas and Jetstream™ Oakleaf Hydrangeas also provide fantastic autumn color.

- Scarlet Jewell™ Maple Tree: Homeowners can usher in fall early with these crimson leaves, which show up a full two weeks before those of other red maples. In the spring, bright red flowers appear. How to Prune Panicle Hydrangeas

Spring is the best time to prune back your panicle hydrangeas! But what the heck is a panicle-type? How do you tell them apart from the others? These hydrangeas are the ones with a triangular shape that bloom white in summer and then turn a red, pink, or parchment in fall. Something like Vanilla Strawberry™, Strawberry Sundae™ and White Diamonds® Hydrangea.

We recommend pruning these types of hydrangeas back 30-50% of the way down the established stems. It may seem like a lot, but it's necessary to prevent flopping late in summer when the heavy flower heads are in full bloom.

Prune at a 45% angle just above a set of buds.

This type of hydrangea grows flowers in "new wood," which means the growth that will start in spring, so you don't have to worry about cutting off potential blooms from last year, like on some other mophead-type hydrangeas.

NOTE: If you have an older, more established panicle hydrangea that isn't developing the big beautiful blooms that it used to, give it a good hard prune in late winter/early spring. That means cutting down to the lowest set of viable buds, which is likely between 10" and 18" off the ground. This will help reinvigorate the shrub.

Bailey Nurseries Promotes Two From Inside Sales Department


Tiffany Nohl and Andy Herting Move to Brand & Licensing Sales Representative and Outside Sales Representative

St. Paul, MN (March 18, 2016) – Bailey Nurseries is excited to announce the promotion of two Inside Sales Representatives to new roles within the company. Tiffany Nohl has been promoted to Brand & Licensing Sales Representative, and Andy Herting has accepted the role of Outside Sales Representative.

Tiffany Nohl will be working to develop and increase sales and sell through for the brands through the existing network of growers. Tiffany has worked at Bailey Nurseries since 2011 as an Inside Sales Representative. “I am very excited to support the brands’ growth in this new role,” Tiffany adds. “Since I started at Bailey Nurseries, the brands have been an important piece of Inside Sales, and having the ability to work directly with growers will be a great challenge.”

Also promoted from Inside Sales, Andy Herting will be handling the Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee territory as Bailey Nurseries’ newest Outside Sales Representative. Andy has worked at Bailey Nurseries’ Main Office in Minnesota as an Inside Sales Representative for over a year, and will be relocating to Lexington, Kentucky to better service his new customers. “Moving to a new part of the country and meeting our fantastic customers will be an exciting adventure,” Andy shares. “This is a great opportunity, and I look forward to supporting Bailey’s customers in this beautiful part of the country.”

Tiffany’s role is effective immediately. Andy will be relocating and begin work with his new customers in early April. Congratulations to Tiffany and Andy.

Kerry Pieritz Promoted to Outside Sales Representative


Pieritz to cover Chicagoland and western Indiana region for Bailey Nurseries

St. Paul, MN (February 23, 2016) – After nearly six years as an Inside Sales Representative, Bailey Nurseries announces that Kerry Pieritz has been promoted to an Outside Sales Representative position covering the Chicagoland and western Indiana region, effective immediately. During her tenure at Bailey Nurseries, Kerry worked with customers throughout the Midwest, including this territory with Sales Representative Dave Warning.

“Following Dave’s recent move to the Grower Specialist position at Bailey Nurseries, Kerry is the perfect fit to take over that territory,” said Sales Manager Ted McDonald. “Her experience with these customers, knowledge of our products and industry, as well as her outgoing and enthusiastic personality will be of great benefit to the territory.”

“It has been great getting to know everyone over the last 6 years and I am grateful for this new opportunity,” Kerry shared. “I am extremely excited to step up and be able to work with everyone more closely, and am looking forward to helping my territory’s customers grow their business this spring!”

USDA Clears Barberry for Sale

We are excited to share the news that nine barberry, four of which are from the First Editions® Collection, have been named resistant to black stem rust by the USDA. After testing in the Cereal Rust lab, these varieties have been allowed for sale. The First Editions® varieties include Toscana™, Moscato™, Lambrusco™, Daybreak and Limoncello™. Bailey Nurseries Hires Grower Specialist Sales Representative


Dave Warning to manage grower customers in Upper Midwest

(February 2, 2016) – As a supplier of premium bareroot and liner material, Bailey Nurseries has placed a great emphasis on supporting their grower customers with customized tools. To further support that goal, Bailey Nurseries has announced that Dave Warning will be the company’s first Grower Specialist Sales Representative for the Upper Midwest market. Warning will work specifically with grower customers in Illinois, Wisconsin and western Indiana to manage their unique needs.

Warning has been a Territory Sales Representative at Bailey Nurseries for almost 14 years in the Chicagoland and western Indiana region. He has a strong track record of customer service, growth and forward-thinking goals that will be of great benefit to his new role. His expertise in bareroot product and JumpStarts™, Bailey Nurseries’ new quart-sized potted liner program, will be particularly useful for growers.

“We are excited at the knowledge and experience he brings to this position,” said Bailey Nurseries Sales Manager Ted McDonald. “Dave has strong relationships within the territory, and allowing him to focus on this essential market channel will be an incredible asset to our customers.”

Bailey Nurseries Hires David Roberts


David Roberts selected to lead the recently acquired Plant Introductions, Inc.

St. Paul, MN (January 4, 2016) – Bailey Nurseries today announced that David Roberts has been hired as the General Manager and Breeder for Plant Introductions, Inc. Roberts will manage day-to-day operations, lead breeding direction and coordinate breeding objectives for the company with Bailey Nurseries management and PII consultants Dr. Michael Dirr, Mark Griffith and Jeff Beasley. Roberts will be based at the Watkinsville, Georgia facility, which was acquired by Bailey Nurseries in 2015.

“David is bringing great knowledge and energy to PII,” said Bailey Nurseries President Terri McEnaney. “That strong combination of experience and enthusiasm expands the opportunity for PII to continue bringing top quality, groundbreaking genetics to market.”

Roberts has a master’s degree from North Carolina State University in Horticultural Science with a concentration in Ornamental Plant Breeding. Over the last several years he has worked as a graduate student with Dr. Dennis Werner and Dr. Tom Ranney where he developed a passion for ornamental plant breeding and propagation. Roberts’ work at PII will be focused on producing cultivars through research, genetic improvement and innovative hybridization in accordance with the plant breeding strategies set forth by the Bailey Nurseries/PII ownership and Plant Development team.

We are very excited to announce that Bailey Nurseries and Endless Summer® Hydrangeas are expanding our relationship with the Heritage Museums & Gardens on Cape Cod by sponsoring the expansion of their hydrangea garden. Last year, we provided the Endless Summer® Hydrangeas Garden within their hydrangea collection, and now that area will expand over one acre and focus on testing and displaying new hydrangea cultivars that are available in garden centers. Heritage Museums & Gardens will be home to a national hydrangea test garden where, for the next five years, new hybrid varieties of hydrangeas will be planted, grown, and studied by professional growing experts from across the country. The test garden is an offshoot of Hydrangeas 2015, an international conference attended by hydrangea experts from around the world which was held at Heritage this past July. The project will make Heritage’s Hydrangea Garden the most comprehensive in the United States. Test garden partners include leading professional growers, Bailey Nurseries (creators of Endless Summer® Hydrangeas) and Ball Horticultural Company; renowned plant expert Dr. Michael Dirr and his wife Bonnie; the Cape Cod Hydrangea Society and the American Hydrangea Society. Heritage staff and horticultural interns will document and collect data on plant performance that will enable these growers to perfect new hydrangea varieties and gauge how these varieties perform in New England, one of the country’s largest markets for hydrangeas. The test garden will build on Heritage’s hydrangea collection of 155 species and cultivated varieties, expand and enhance its existing hydrangea garden, and showcase the depth and breadth of these iconic plants for Heritage visitors. Heritage visitors will also have the opportunity to preview new plants being readied for the gardening market. Designed by horticulture director Les Lutz and installed in phases over five years, the expanded garden will include new hydrangeas and other plants, a new water feature, and stone walkways that will allow visitors to stroll among an unprecedented variety of hydrangeas. The test garden will afford researchers and growers easy access to test plants while offering home gardeners examples of which plants pair well together. “Heritage founder Josiah Lilly had a vision for our institution to be ‘…an outreaching force for education…’, and we are looking forward to contributing new knowledge to the field. It is truly an honor to be working with the top professionals in the horticulture world,” said Ellen Spear, President & CEO of Heritage Museums & Gardens. “For visitors, expanding this garden will mean more beautiful and inspiring landscapes to visit and enjoy.” The test garden was conceived as part of collaborative conversations among key attendees at the three-day Hydrangeas 2015 Conference. The initiative is being led by Dr. Michael Dirr, horticulture professor emeritus at the University of Georgia and author of over 300 scientific and popular publications, in collaboration with expert growers from Bailey Nurseries and Ball, who were inspired by Heritage’s existing Hydrangea Garden. “Worldwide, hydrangeas are the most celebrated, cherished and revered garden plants,” said Dirr. “Heritage, with the expanded and documented collection, will educate gardeners and scientists about the rich diversity within the genus. The garden will be the platinum standard for all who desire to increase their knowledge of this noble genus. The genesis of this expansion was spawned by the recent hydrangea conference at Heritage Museums & Gardens. The attendees’ excitement was palpable; their financial commitment gratifying. ” Work on the new Hydrangea test garden is slated to begin at Heritage in spring 2016.

Hydrangea Watering Tips

Even though hydrangeas require more water than some other shrubs, they don't like to be over-watered. It is best to have moist soil and not wet soil. One reason hydrangeas get over-watered is when they wilt in the afternoon sun. Our gut reaction is to run out and douse the plant in water, but STOP! That's not always the best option. Over-watering can actually prohibit future bloom production. Watch the video above for tips on watering hydrangeas!

Bailey Nurseries Acquires Plant Introductions, Inc.

We are excited to announce that Bailey Nurseries has acquired Plant Introductions, Inc. (PII), which is now working as the breeding arm of Bailey Nurseries. PII has a long history of introducing exceptional genetics, many of which have been introduced through our Endless Summer® and First Editions® brands. We are fortunate to have built a wonderful partnership with PII partners Mark Griffith, Dr. Michael Dirr and Jeff Beasley (above, L to R) over the past many years, and are humbled and enthusiastic to continue their great work. These visionaries will also remain on board as consultants for Bailey Nurseries in the coming years, providing direction on breeding, plant trials and market trends.

For our customers, this means day-to-day business as usual, as well as the expansion of cutting-edge genetics from Bailey Nurseries and our consumer brands. We will continue to provide top-quality product with high standards for customer service.
